About Our Data
Key Findings
We built this database because the information families actually need — walkability, ski school ages, beginner terrain quality — is scattered across hundreds of resort websites with no easy way to compare. After analyzing 1,106 resorts across 32 countries, a few patterns stand out immediately.
15.8%
Of 1,106 resorts analyzed, only 175 (15.8%) score 8.0 or higher for walkability.
Most ski resorts require cars or shuttles to reach the slopes from lodging.
3.3 years
Average ski school minimum age across 464 curated resorts is 3.3 years.
315 resorts accept children age 3 or younger. Only 4 resorts accept children at age 2.
22.2%
245 resorts (22.2%) rate "Excellent" for beginner terrain.
The majority of resorts have adequate but not exceptional learning terrain.
7.8 vs 7.6
European resorts average 7.8 for beginner friendliness vs 7.6 for North American resorts.
Based on 174 European and 139 North American curated resorts.
These numbers reveal something we hear from families constantly: the resorts with the biggest reputations are not always the best fit for beginners. Our best resorts for beginners ranking surfaces the mountains where learning terrain is genuinely prioritized, not just listed as a bullet point.
Detailed Statistics
Below we break the data down by category. Every number is calculated from our live database, so these figures update as we add and refine resort profiles. For details on how we arrive at each score, see our scoring methodology guide.
Ski School Minimum Ages
Based on 464 resorts with verified ski school age data
Ski school age is one of the most common questions we get from parents planning a first trip. If your child is under 4, your resort options narrow significantly. We maintain dedicated pages for resorts accepting 2-year-olds and resorts accepting 3-year-olds to help families with young children find the right fit. For a broader look at choosing a resort, see our how to choose a resort guide.

Family Village Vibe
Only 14.0% of resorts achieve an "Excellent" combined family score across walkability, beginner terrain, and village vibe.
The combined family score is where we see the biggest separation between resorts that market themselves as "family-friendly" and resorts that actually deliver on it. If you want to compare specific resorts side by side, our comparison tool lets you stack walkability, beginner terrain, and village vibe scores against each other in one view.
