How We Score Ski Resorts

A transparent methodology designed around the questions families actually ask when planning ski trips.

We built this scoring system because existing resort guides optimize for expert skiers chasing powder days. Families need different answers: Can my 3-year-old take lessons? Can we walk to the lifts? Will the drive terrify my partner?

How Our Scores Work

  • Every resort is rated on a 0-10 scale with one decimal point for precision
  • We evaluate 6 scoring dimensions tailored to family ski trips
  • All methodology is transparent — we show exactly how scores are calculated
  • Family-first criteria drive every rating, from walkability to ski school quality

Independent and Transparent

We accept no payment from resorts for higher ratings. Our scores are based on independent research, publicly available data, and family ski community feedback. If we get something wrong, we want to hear about it.

The 0-10 Scoring System

We use a 0-10 scale with one decimal place, inspired by the Pitchfork music rating system. This gives you both quick scannability and enough precision to distinguish between similar resorts.

Scores map to four categories so you can assess a resort at a glance. Explore how these scores play out across real resorts in our beginner-friendly rankings.

Excellent
8.0 - 10.0

Outstanding. Among the best in this category.

Good
6.0 - 7.9

Solid performance. Will satisfy most families.

Fair
4.0 - 5.9

Adequate but with notable limitations.

Poor
0.0 - 3.9

Significant challenges for families in this area.

Walkability Score

What we measure: How easy is it to get from typical lodging to the ski lifts without a car?

For families juggling ski gear, toddlers, and snack bags, the distance from lodge to lifts can make or break a morning. A resort with high walkability means less stress before you even clip in. See which resorts lead the pack in our most walkable resorts rankings.

Scoring Criteria

  • 9-10Ski-in/ski-out from most lodging options
  • 7-8Under 5 minute walk to lifts on flat terrain
  • 5-65-15 minute walk or convenient free shuttle (under 10 min frequency)
  • 3-4Requires driving or 15+ minute walk; shuttle available but infrequent
  • 0-2Car essential; no practical alternatives

Beginner Friendliness Score

What we measure: How good is this mountain for learning to ski?

Not all green runs are created equal. Some resorts have dedicated learning areas separated from main traffic with gentle progression from magic carpet to easy greens to blues. Others funnel beginners onto busy runs or have "steep greens" that intimidate new skiers.

Scoring Criteria

  • 9-10Exceptional learning terrain; dedicated beginner areas separated from main traffic; excellent progression from magic carpet to greens to easy blues
  • 7-8Good beginner terrain; adequate learning areas; some crowding possible
  • 5-6Acceptable for beginners; limited learning areas or mixed with main traffic
  • 3-4Challenging for beginners; steep greens, limited terrain, or very crowded
  • 0-2Not recommended for beginners; expert-focused mountain

Family Village Vibe Score

What we measure: How family-friendly is the village and base area environment?

The skiing is only part of a family trip. After the lifts close, you need a place where kids can safely explore, where dining works with early bedtimes, and where the atmosphere is more hot chocolate than apres-ski bar scene.

Scoring Criteria

  • 9-10Purpose-built family village; pedestrian-only areas; lots of kid activities; safe, magical atmosphere
  • 7-8Family-friendly with good amenities; mostly walkable; some car traffic
  • 5-6Adequate for families; basic amenities; may need car for some activities
  • 3-4Limited family appeal; spread out; car-dependent; party atmosphere
  • 0-2Not family-oriented; primarily bar scene or very limited services

Drive Difficulty Score

What we measure: How challenging is the drive from the nearest major airport in winter conditions?

Arriving stressed from a white-knuckle mountain drive is no way to start a family vacation. Some resorts sit right off well-maintained highways. Others require chains, 4WD, or serious nerve.

Note: This score is inverted — 10 means easiest drive, 0 means most difficult.

Scoring Criteria

  • 9-10Easy highway driving; rarely any weather impact; no mountain passes
  • 7-8Mostly highway; occasional winter conditions; well-maintained roads
  • 5-6Some mountain driving; chains sometimes needed; manageable for most
  • 3-4Challenging mountain roads; chains often required; not for nervous drivers
  • 0-2Difficult drive; steep grades; frequent closures; 4WD recommended

Data Sources

Our database covers 1,107 ski resorts across 32 countries and 147 regions. We combine hand-curated family data with open-source terrain information. For a deeper look at how we collect and verify this data, see our data sources guide.

Dataset Composition

  • 467 curated resorts with detailed family data including ski school ages, manual walkability assessments, and verified amenities
  • 640 imported from OpenSkiMap with terrain data and estimated scores (data © OpenStreetMap contributors)

Curated resorts are marked with a confidence level (verified, estimated, or needs-review) so you know how reliable the data is.

We built these scores to answer the questions families actually ask — not to rank mountains by vertical drop or snowfall totals. Every dimension reflects something that matters when you have kids in tow.

Our Principles

Independent Research

Scores are based on publicly available information, on-mountain observation, and family ski community feedback. We do not accept payment for ratings or reviews.

Family-First Criteria

We optimize for what matters to families: Can I put my 3-year-old in ski school? Can we walk to the lifts? Will my beginner spouse have a good time? These questions drive our scoring.

Continuous Improvement

Resorts change. Ski schools update policies. We welcome corrections and updates from the community and update our data regularly.
